2026 Squad Selection Framework – Shito Ryu Karate Wales
Squad Selections: 20th December 2025
These selections will determine athlete placement for the 2026 season, including pathways toward national, international and Para Karate competition.
This year four squad pathways will be selected, plus a separate international team for Hungary.
Squad Pathways
1. Regional Squad
Foundation competition squad focused on developing experience and mat confidence.
Competes at:
WKGB Welsh Championships (Open/Closed & Youth)
Welsh & regional open competitions
Pathway into National Development and Elite A-Squad
Athletes may be invited to WKGB National Squad training sessions (Cardiff)
Funding Eligibility:
➡ Up to £200 council funding once attending national sessions.
2. Para Karate Squad
Dedicated pathway for neurodiverse and adaptive athletes.
Focused initially on K23 Autism Spectrum Para Kata
Can compete in Welsh, regional and Para Karate events
Strong performers may be considered for international Para representation
Expansion plan:
Future development aims to include visual & physical impairment categories as the programme grows.
Funding Eligibility:
➡ £200–£800 available based on progression & selection status
3. National Development Pathway Squad
Progression squad for athletes building toward national and international selection.
May attend WKGB National Squad sessions (Cardiff)
This pathway enables eligibility for Wales international selection
Focused on performance kata, pressure handling, competition maturity, physical development
Funding Eligibility:
➡ £200–£800 available based on progression & selection status
4. Elite A-Squad
High-performance squad preparing athletes for top-level international events.
Expected to train consistently and compete regularly
Will attend international competitions, including:
• Dublin Open
• WKF Youth League (Poreč & Venice)
• Additional international eventsReceives individual athlete development plans
Priority access to PT sessions with coaching staff
Pathway aimed at international medal readiness
Funding Eligibility:
➡ Eligible for up to £800 council funding annually
Shito Ryu European & World Championships 2026
A separate selection will be made for:

Hungary – 5–7 June 2026**
Separate from monthly squad fees
Open to athletes from Welsh Shito Ryu groups/associations
Squad Fee Structure (2026 Season)
Monthly contributions support squad coaching, development programmes and competition pathways.
Standard Squad Fee – £15 per month

Access to Shito Ryu Wales Squad Sessions
Hosted at Hajime Hiro Dojo – Saturdays
(Sessions may not run when they conflict with competition weekends)Access to Hajime Hiro Dojo gym and mats via SmartLock (6am-10pm)
Elite A-Squad Fee – £20 per month
Includes all Standard Squad access plus:
Personalised training plans
Priority PT session booking access
International-focused development support
